Lions Rookie Arrested Days Before Draft

A Colorado newspaper reports Lions rookie linebacker Jordon Dizon was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving days before he was selected in this year’s draft. The Boulder “Daily Camera” reports Dizon was driving the wrong way on a one-way street and had a blood alcohol level of 0.097, above the legal limit of 0.08. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to appear in court in August.

Lions’ Pre-Season TV Team Complete

The Lions’ preseason television team is now set with homegrown talent. WWJ-TV, Channel 62 officials, on Thursday, announced that former Lions Heisman Pro Bowl kick returner and HeismanTrophy winner, Desmond Howard will provide the color analysis along side previously announced play-by-play man Gus Johnson. They will be joined by local sportscaster Matt Shepard and Lions Hall of Fame tight end, Charlie Sanders, who will cover pre-game programming. Both Shepard and Sanders will provide commentary and sideline reporting during games as well.

Former Coach Bobby Ross Takes a Shot at RB Sanders

Former Detroit Lions Head coach Bobby Ross says Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders avoided being the the leader of the team while he coached there. Speaking at a recent awards dinner, Ross says he didn’t know if Sanders “really loved the game,” but he “worked hard at.”

He says he always wanted Sanders to step and be a leader, but the elusive running back shunned the role. Ross also said that Sanders was the only player he ever coached that whenever he touched the ball, he thought he would run for a touchdown. Ross coached the team from 1997, until the middle of the 2000 season when he abruptly resigned because of health issues.

Lions Close Out OTA’s Before Six Week Break

The Lions will conduct their final off season training program today before taking a six week break. Most of the team will spend another week working with the strength coaches before heading out on their break. Rookie running back Kevin Smith says he will continue to train and work out for most of the six weeks, while veteran quarterback Jon Kitna says he will rest-up and take in some of Michigan. Fifth year wide receiver Roy Williams says he will work out at home in the hot Texas sun and do some running in order to come to training camp in better shape.

Look for Williams to Stick Around in 2008

It does not look like more than ever that the Lions are going to look to move WR Roy Williams before the start of the season. The Sporting News’ Inside Dish says that the team is counting on Williams and second-year wide out Calvin Johnson to be a strength of the team in 2008. The team has a shot to keep Williams with the team through 2009 if they place the franchise tag on him, which they very well may do. Unless another team comes up with a blockbuster deal, look for the Williams and Johnson WR combo to have a big impact on the team this season.

Voting Begins For Lions All-Time Team

Fans can now begin voting for the Detroit Lions’ 75th Season All-Time Team. The team will have a different position on its website from June through September for fans to choose the players they feel worthy to be on the all-time team. The team will be announced on November 9th at Ford Field during a regular season game with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The current voting period is now through June 16th, with the Wide Receiver position vote. Fans can go to Detroitlions.com to vote.

Could DT Cody Be on His Way Out?

Is Lions DT Shaun Cody is danger of being cut? That could be if you read into a recent article on the DT on MLive.com. The paper says that the coaching staff is upset with Cody for being so ineffective and inconsistent over the past two years. He was the only defensive lineman not to record a sack last season for the club. It could be that Cody just does not have the intensity to be a top-notch DT in the NFL. Look for Cody to be on the bubble, as it could come down to him beating out Langston Moore for the final spot on the roster come August.

Johnson Said to Be Showing Great Promise in Camps

The Lions are expecting big things from WR Calvin Johnson in his second year, and Sportingnews.com is reporting that the wide out is looking good so far. The report is that Johnson is showing some great skills and that it’s going to be tough this season to cover his one-on-one. Johnson had a productive but tough 2007 as he suffered a back injury. He played in 15 games and caught 48 balls for 756 yards and four touchdowns. Look for a big 08 from Johnson as he becomes the teams premier wide out.
